May we trust tooth implants?

Absolutly! They are the next best thing to your natural teeth following tooth loss. They incorporate what is called an osteo-integrated implant fixture, placed in your mouth, beneath your gums by either an oral surgeon or a prosthodontist. When they are placed correctly, they heal (integrate) into the bone structure beneath your gumline at the site of the lost tooth or teeth. Some of them require a few months for healing, but there is a new variety out now, called immediate load implants that can have the restored tooth mounted to it immediately ... actually during the surgery to place the implant.





J*Mo mentions her husband having one split off a piece of the root under the tooth. Be assured, that was not an implant. More than likely it was a crown with a post cemented into the root canal of the tooth after endodontic work was done and a crown prepared to replace that particular tooth. If it was a true implant fixture, nothing of the natural tooth would have remained to split off!





The biggest drawback with implant work is the cost. The implant fixture and placement runs around $1000.00 to $1500.00 around here (South New Jersey) and it can be much more in other areas, like New York City. That's just the cost of the fixture. Then there is a cost for the crown made to fit onto it. Crowns in my area run anywhere from $800.00 to $1200.00 per tooth. So you're talking about $1800.00 to $2700.00 per tooth. Very expensive.





If you can't afford that kind of money, go with fixed bridgework (people call them caps). That's an artificial tooth or crown cemented over a prepared tooth that has been cut down to allow the crown to fit over it. They are still expensive, but there isn't any implant work to pay for.





The best solution is to keep your natural teeth healthy. It's cheaper and they look the best, no matter how good the bridgework is!

Reply:Yes I'm a nurse. My brother had implants and he said it's the bset thing since slice bread. Ha ha, take care it's ok and will serve it purpose.

Reply:No. Tooth implants are diabolical and are only out to help themselves. They will steal your wallet and have sex with your wife. Never trust a tooth implant.

Reply:My husband had one in his front tooth, which got loose and craked the peice of root that was still in there. He got a absess and his whole face swelled up. Needless to say, he now has a bridge.
Reply:My sister fell when she was in high school and knocked out three teeth in front of her mouth. She had teeth implants put in and that was over thirty years ago. She's had few problems with them and low maintenance.
