I have been a licensed dentist for 7 years now so this is an opinion of such a person that preforms these procedures daily.

Crown- basically shaving down the portion of the tooth to give room so that a fake (crown) can have room to function as if the tooth was brand new.

Bridge- if you have teeth 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 and you lost teeth 3 and 4 you would make a bridge that covers2, 3, 4, and 5 by constructing 4 crowns that are connected to each other when they are made.

Implant- this definition is not exactly the correct way to explain implants, but as long as I am explaining to a non dentist- it is like taking a screw directly into the bone and using the portion of the screw that sticks out of the gums to place a crown on just as if it were a natural tooth root.

Down side of a bridge is that the two adjacent teeth to the space where there are teeth missing, have to be used to grind down to a nub and sometimes these teeth have nothing wrong to start with.

Down side for an implant is that they are expensive, not covered by insurance, and the success rate varies from type of implant placed to habits of the patient receiving the implant.

All should function as a normal tooth, just different cleaning requirements.

Last but not least, you cant bridge a natural tooth to an implant.

Thanks

Reply:i had 4 crowns put on and it was the best money i spend in a long time no more sore gums , no bleeding and it was tax deductible
Reply:While in the US Army I had two implants one crown and a bridge put in..they are a time consuming effort..not to mentio some pain...but they look like my own teeth..it definitely means keeeping up with daily oral hygiene to prvent serious gum disease later or even loosing the teeth in and around the inplants..crowns..bridges..I floss regularly and I've never had a serious problem..got to keep up with your six month check ups too.
Reply:Since they have to open the gum to do an implant I suppose you could get an infection before it heals, but if the dentist thinks this is a risk he will prescribe an antibiotic. I considered an implant, but it would cost twice as much as so I went with the bridge. I don't think it can damage any other teeth but the two adjacent teeth have to be crowned to secure the bridge tooth. One of mine had to have a root canal and crown anyway, but the other was a perfectly good tooth, so I guess you could say it was damaged. The crowns and bridge don't feel natural, but they don't hurt anymore.
